High schoolgirls flag footballis officially coming to North Carolina.
After years of discussion surrounding one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association voted to sanction girls flag football during the second day of its spring Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, May 6.
The motion narrowly passed by a 9-8 vote. Girls flag football will begin competition in the fall of the 2026-27 school year, a following approved motion decided.

The board wasn't done making crucial decisions just yet. After sanctioning girls flag football, it voted to sanction boys volleyball, adding another rapidly expanding sport to the state’s high school landscape. North Carolina joins 36 other states that currently offer boys volleyball.
The vote passed 10-7 and will begin play in the spring of 2027.
Wednesday’s meeting also featured several other major decisions, including motions involving playoff bracket sizes, basketball shot clocks and more. Below is a full list of approved and rejected motions.
